Retreat Director and Wandering Preacher Profile Rev. Paul R. Fagan, C.P. Born: 11/02/53 -- Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Professed: August 22, 1982 Finally Professed: September 1, 1985 - Ordained: June 18, 1986
I am the second of three children born to Paul and Rita Fagan. My older sister, Bernadette, lives with her family in the Indianapolis area and my younger brother, James, lives with his family in Greater Chicago area.
I grew up in Port Vue, Pa., just south of Pittsburgh. My family moved to the Philadelphia area where I went to Archbishop Wood High School. When it came time for college I move on to St. Louis, Mo. where I attended St. Louis University. After receiving my BSSW, I went to work for the State of Illinois as a Child Care Worker. I worked with abused and neglected children and their families and was also involved in specialized adoptions.
In September of 1980 I entered the Residence Program of the Passionist Community in Philadelphia, Pa. After a year I entered the Novitiate and was professed a Passionist on August 22, 1982. My Passionist journey took me to Chicago where I studied for 4 years at Catholic Theological Union. I completed my studies in June of 1986 with a Masters of Divinity with a Word and Worship Specialization.
I was ordained on June 18, 1986 and assigned to the Bishop Molloy Passionist Retreat House in Jamaica Queens, New York. I ministered in the retreat house for 8 years offering weekend retreats and evening programs to adults and midweek retreat days to students. During my time in retreat work I attended a few classes at Fordham University in drama. I try to apply the skills of acting and drama to my preaching ministry.
In May 1994 I was elected to the Provincial Council of the St. Paul of the Cross Province. I served the Passionist Community as a consultor to the provincial until May of 1998. At the time of my election I was transfer to the Passionist Preaching Ministry. For the nest five years I have used the talents, skills and experiences developed over my first 8 years of retreat ministry to enrich parishes with Missions, Renewals and Retreats.
I am energized by the ministry of preaching. Giving people good words to reflect on and prayerful celebrations is what I always hope to accomplish when I am invited to a parish. One of my heroes has always been the Apostle Paul, a traveling preacher himself. Sharing my faith with others in a genuine way, as St. Paul did, is my life long goal! I work at being a quiet peaceful man, interested in people and the goodness and joy they can bring to life.
Currently my full-time ministry is in New York City, The Bronx to be exact, where I am Director of the Passionist Spiritual Center of Riverdale, a section of the Bronx. I am in my eighth year as director and the ministry and Passionist Community life here along the Great River is very fulfilling. Stop in if you are visiting or passing through! |
