Fr. Paul R. Fagan, C.P., Preacher Man - Preacher-on-the-Run
THE PASSIONIST PREACHING MINISTRY
My current ministry is twofold. On the one hand, I am Director of Passionist Communications and Executive Producer and Host of The Sunday Mass. Secondly, I am an itinerant preacher, meaning I am on the road traveling to wherever people invite me in order to share my life, my faith sand my friendship with God.
My ministry as Director of Passionist Communications basically centers around the production of The Sunday Mass, which is a weekly presentation of the Sunday Mass found on various television stations across the United States and Canada. It can also be found online which makes it accessible around the world. The Sunday Mass is taped at Immaculate Conception Parish in Jamaica, Queens, New York. Immaculate Conception is a Passionist Parish and is part of a large Passionist foundation made up of the parish, a monastery and retreat house. For more information about Passionist Communications and The Sunday Mass visit our website www.thesundaymass.org.
My second ministry, that of being an itinerant preacher has deep roots in the Passionist Congregation. The Passionists have a long tradition as itinerant preachers. Our founder, St. Paul of the Cross, was an itinerant preacher and founded the community to be preachers. St. Paul of the Cross would wander the roads of Italy stopping in towns and villages to proclaim the Good News of the Passion of Jesus Christ. He would walk throughout the town or village ringing a bell calling people to the town square, the town center, where he would preach to them about the love of God. Eventually, St. Paul of the Cross got invited into the local parishes and parish mission at least for the Passionists were born.
Since the time St. Paul of the Cross, Passionists have been celebrating Parish Missions, Retreats and Renewals wherever we have gone. Along with retreats and retreat houses, itinerant preaching is mainly what Passionists are known for. We do not have schools; we are not educators in the formal sense. We are involved in parishes in many places but our primary ministry, our primary charism, is that of preaching the Word and keeping alive the memory of Jesus Christ's Passion. We have a motto, "May the Passion of Jesus Christ be always in our hearts!"
So, as I have journeyed through my life as a Passionist my ministry has always been about preaching. My current ministries of Passionist Communications/The Sunday Mass and being an itinerant preacher or my previous ministries of retreat preacher and retreat director all have their origins in preaching. Thirty plus years dedicated to inviting people into a friendship with God by celebrating times of retreat, mission, prayer, reflection, renewal, reconciliation and Eucharist. It is a wonderful ministry and one through which I have learn much.
Aside from my Sunday Mass ministry, which takes place in New York, I often find myself on the road. Itinerant preaching is a wonderful ministry which gives me the opportunity to travel the country and celebrate with people in their home parish or in other settings. It gives me the chance like St. Paul of the Cross, like St. Paul the Apostle to proclaim the Good News. It gives me a chance to keep alive the beautiful memory of Jesus Christ's Passion and to share God's love with others!
