A Runner’s Thoughts: “I loved the feeling of freedom in running, the fresh air, the feeling that the only person I’m competing with is me.” (Wilma Rudolph) Walking and moving through life another way often can give us the same feeling...
A Runner’s Thoughts: Remember that if during our runs we have the desire to run and pray then our runs can transform the simplest moments into divine encounters! The same is true if we walk or move through life another way…
A Runner’s Thoughts: “That's the thing about running: Your greatest runs are rarely measured by racing success. They are moments in time when running allows you to see how wonderful your life is.” (Kara Goucher) So to in the spiritual life…
A Runner’s Thoughts: “I tell runners… that no matter how inexperienced a runner you may be, there is nothing wrong with being intense. You don't know what you might discover.” (Francie Larrieu Smith) – “With the proper motivation, that is, a good reason for wanting to do it, your mind [will and spirit] can overcome any sort of adversity. (Franz Stampfl) So to in the spiritual life!
A Runner’s Thoughts: Running can clear cobwebs from our minds and focus our thinking. Running can give us time and space to sort out the things that are bothering us, or challenging us. At times running allows us to detach and think of nothing at all. But perhaps most importantly running offers us an opportunity to connect with God through our senses. Running, walking, moving through life graces us with an opportunity to taste, touch, smell, hear and see God in our life!
A Runner’s Thoughts: “For every runner who tours the world running marathons, there are thousands who run to hear the leaves and listen to the rain, and look to the day when it is suddenly as easy as a bird in flight.” (George Sheehan)
A Runner’s Thoughts: “Running has taught me that you can do anything you set your mind to. If you want something bad enough, put in the effort and you’ll see it happen.”
(Jen Hyatt-Manchenko who ran off 128 pounds) So to in the spiritual life…
A Runner’s Thoughts: “I view life as a series of training events building up to the big race and final finish line and I am always in training, always in the process of reaching the final goal.” (Matthew Shafner)
A Runner’s Thoughts: “As every runner knows, running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are.” (Joan Benoit Samuelson) The same can be true when we talk about faith. Faith is more than just reciting prayers or going to mass every Sunday, though like putting one foot in front of the other when we run, these rituals are important. Faith is really about how we live our life. Faith is like taking a breath. We need to breathe when we run and when we do anything else. It is the same with faith. A person of faith allies her or his faith to every aspect of life. Faith is about who we are. So today and every day let us be runners but also let us be people of faith!
A Runner’s Thoughts: “Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.” (Christopher McDougall) And as a friend often says…So to in the spiritual life!
